Sowing campaign in Ukraine in full swing

As of May 5, farmers across all categories of farms have sown more than two-fifths of the planned areas with grains and pulses. The fastest sowing pace is observed in central and southern regions.

This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.

In total, 2,609.0 thsd ha have been sown, or 43% of the forecast for grains and pulses. Including:

  • spring wheat — 177.9 thsd ha,
  • spring barley — 687.3 thsd ha,
  • peas — 252.6 thsd ha,
  • oats — 135.4 thsd ha,
  • corn — 1,346.7 thsd ha,
  • millet — 5.2 thsd ha.

In addition, farmers in Sumy and Kharkiv regions have started sowing buckwheat, with 0.64 thsd ha already planted.

Regional leaders include:

  • Poltava region — 294.3 thsd ha (wheat — 4.9 thsd ha, barley — 65.1 thsd ha, peas — 12.1 thsd ha, oats — 1.9 thsd ha, corn — 210.3 thsd ha).
  • Odesa region — 193.4 thsd ha (wheat — 10 thsd ha, barley — 35 thsd ha, peas — 95 thsd ha, oats — 1.2 thsd ha, corn — 22.3 thsd ha, millet — 0.4 thsd ha).
  • Kyiv region — 183.8 thsd ha (wheat — 25.6 thsd ha, barley — 39 thsd ha, peas — 5.5 thsd ha, oats — 6 thsd ha, corn — 107 thsd ha, millet — 0.6 thsd ha).

Sowing of industrial crops is also ongoing. A total of 2,066.8 thsd ha have been planted so far. In particular, sugar beet — 182.9 thsd ha (93% of forecast), sunflower — 1,506.8 thsd ha (30%), and soybeans — 377.1 thsd ha (18%).
