Global rapeseed and canola meal production in the 2025/26 season will reach a historic high of 47.3 million tonnes, 1.8 million tonnes more than the previous year and significantly above the five-year average of 42 million tonnes, according to analysts at Oil World (Germany).
Global rapeseed meal consumption is estimated to have increased by 0.6-0.7 million tonnes in October-December 2025, and is expected to increase by approximately 0.2 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching a new high of 23.5 million tonnes in the first six months of the 2025/26 season, up from 22.7 million tonnes the previous year.
The main increase in demand is coming from EU countries. Thanks to increased domestic production and significant imports (primarily from Canada), EU consumption reached 7.8 million tonnes in October-March 2025/26 (+0.9 million tonnes annually). In Germany, rapeseed meal use in compound feed increased by 13% to 1.24 million tonnes. It is gradually displacing soybean meal (its share decreased by 3%).
Experts at the US Department of Agriculture also expect an expansion of rapeseed acreage in the European Union in 2026. Attractive rapeseed prices in the fall of 2025 prompted farmers to expand their acreage. However, the final harvest is estimated to be lower than last year due to challenges with fertilizer shortages and declining yields.
However, the rapeseed meal market is showing steady growth, supported by both demand from the feed industry and global trends in the vegetable oil market, experts note.
