Drought and wildfires devastate corn crops in Bosnia

Severe drought and wildfires have caused major damage to corn crops in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fires have destroyed thousands of hectares of farmland, while prolonged rainfall shortages have significantly worsened crop conditions in areas that escaped the fires.

Local farmers expect a sharp decline in corn yields. While farms previously harvested an average of around 7 t/ha, yields in the most affected areas are expected to reach no more than 1.5 t/ha this year. This means yields could fall by almost 80%.

The situation is particularly difficult due to the limited availability of irrigation. Most farmers are unable to compensate for the moisture deficit, leaving crop prospects unfavorable. Some farms are already at risk of shutting down due to substantial losses.

Corn losses could have significant consequences for the country’s agricultural sector, as the crop plays an important role in local crop production and feed supply. Agriculture accounts for around 10% of employment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, meaning a major decline in production could create additional economic pressure on rural areas.
