Favorable weather and high yields will ensure record production and export of grain crops in the 2025/26 MY.
According to the USDA FAS forecast, Australia will harvest record wheat and barley crops in the new season.
Thus, the barley production forecast has been increased by 2 million tonnes to 15 million tonnes compared to previous estimates published three months ago, which will exceed the 10-year average (11.8 million tonnes) by 27% due to better-than-expected weather conditions in most growing regions and high yields in Queensland and New South Wales, where harvesting has already begun.
Recall that Australia is the world’s largest exporter of barley and is among the TOP 3 producers.
The country is expected to export 8.3 million tons of barley in the 2025/26 MY, which will match the previous season’s level and significantly exceed the 10-year average.
Despite a 3% reduction in wheat acreage compared to the previous season, wheat production is expected to increase by 1.9 million tonnes to 36 million tonnes, 31% above the 10-year average. An 8.5% increase in yield, driven by favorable weather conditions, will result in the third-largest wheat harvest in the country’s history.
Experts believe that such high yield rates will be achieved thanks to prolonged and timely rainfall in the main wheat growing regions.
Wheat exports from Australia are forecast to reach 27 million tonnes, significantly exceeding the 10-year average of 19.7 million tonnes.
The wheat and barley harvest in Australia traditionally lasts from October to February.
