Syngenta and INGO launch “WeatherProtection 2025”: a simple solution for a complex climate

Back to all news

After a successful 2024 season, when 97% of program participants received a total of UAH 231 million in compensation, Syngenta, in collaboration with the insurance company INGO, is launching a new season of the index-based insurance program “WeatherProtection 2025”.

The program is specifically designed for farmers and covers the riskiest period for crops – the flowering and grain filling phase. It is during this time that heat, drought, or conversely excessive rainfall can significantly affect crop yields. “WeatherProtection” allows for compensation for losses in corn, sunflower, rapeseed, wheat, and barley – provided that the appropriate Syngenta products are used.

The program operates on the principle of automatic index insurance. There is no need to call experts to the field or prove losses – it is sufficient that meteorological indices record extreme weather conditions. Data is received from the CMORPH and NEMSGLOBAL satellites and analyzed daily across the entire territory of Ukraine.

“INGO issues insurance certificates to all participants, and in case of adverse weather conditions, ensures compensation for losses,” explains Ruslan Zymovets, head of the agricultural insurance department at INGO. “In 2024, we paid compensation to more than 97% of insured farms. In 2025, we expect even more applications and are ready for it.”

The program offers several coverage levels: up to 30% of costs in the base version and up to 50% when using Syngenta products extensively. The formula is simple and transparent, and payments are made directly to farmers’ accounts after the end of the insurance period.

“Index insurance is a simple, understandable, and effective risk management tool. Each program participant has a clear understanding of the conditions: which indices will entitle them to a payment, what portion of costs is covered, and the limits of the compensation model. Thanks to satellite meteorological data, we can not only monitor the climate situation but also promptly activate the payment mechanism through the insurance company,” comments Roman Khrypko, head of the insurance and banking solutions department at Syngenta.

“WeatherProtection 2025” covers the entire territory of Ukraine, including areas near the front line. Insurance periods, weather indices, crops, and other parameters are recorded at the registration stage and remain unchanged throughout the program. This allows farmers to plan both financial and production decisions in advance, understanding the conditions under which the compensation mechanism operates.

“The ‘WeatherProtection’ program has been implemented for the ninth consecutive year and demonstrates increasing interest from farmers every year. In 2025, we already feel that the scale will significantly increase compared to the previous season – both in terms of area and the number of participants. This confirms that index insurance is becoming an effective risk management tool in the agricultural sector. Our goal is to make it a clear and familiar element of modern agrotechnology because for farmers, the most important thing is to have a predictable mechanism to protect their investments,” concludes Roman Khrypko, head of the insurance and banking solutions department at Syngenta.
