Long-term rainfall delayed the sowing campaign in Ukraine

during the period 27 April – 6 may in the West and North of Ukraine had the monthly, and sometimes six weeks of rainfall, leading to excessive wetting of the upper soil layers and relatively high humidity – according to the Ukrainian hydrometeorological.

Powerful showers, sometimes with hail, do not allow the farmers in Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad and Poltava regions to carry out sowing of maize and sunflower in optimum and delayed feeding and handling of plant protection of crops of early grain and leguminous crops. Excessive humidity leads to the development of plant diseases – root rot, powdery mildew and Septoria on cereals.

While in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Kherson regions were moderate precipitation, and in some areas of Zaporozhye region during the month reigns drought.

As of may 13, Ukraine sowed with corn at 3.6 million hectares or 77% of the forecast, sunflower – 4.4 million hectares or 77% of the forecast, soy – 810 thousand hectares or 44%. For comparison, on the same date in 2018, it was planted with maize in 4 million hectares, sunflower – 5 million hectares, soybeans – 1.3 million hectares.

next week in the Central and Western regions will continue, rains and thunderstorms, which will not allow to accelerate the pace of sowing.
