China has suspended imports of Australian barley

Shipments of Australian barley into China after a surge in January, and practically ceased after the Chinese authorities imposed provisional duties on imports. As a result, the cost of imported Australian barley increased by 50%.

China has warned that its anti-dumping investigation against imports of Australian barley can take up to 18 months, with the result that in limbo was the Australian farmers. In may starts the sowing of winter crops, and farmers still can not decide on the sowing structure. According to The Australian Financial Review.

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that anti-dumping review should be completed within 12 months from the date of announcement in November 2018р. However, WTO rules stipulate that in special circumstances the investigation may be extended for another six months.

In March, representatives of the Australian government and the grain lobby has met with officials in Beijing, but the talks have not brought any clarity on the timing of the investigation.

China in November 2018р. announced the beginning of antidumping investigation against imports of Australian barley. The assurances of the Chinese side, Australian exporters have set barley at artificially low prices, than caused damage to domestic producers of this culture. The Australian government considered the beginning of the investigation was politically motivated, a reaction to the criticism of the Australian officials of violations by Beijing of human rights.
