The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Agriculture of Ukraine has assured importers of Ukrainian grain that there are no restrictions on exports from Ukraine and that measures taken by the Ukrainian government to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus won’t limit the trade and delivery of goods.
The Ministry sent the letter to the international partners at the request of the Ukrainian Grain Association, as importers of Ukrainian grain began to express concerns that restrictions and quarantine measures in Ukraine could stop the export or cause problems in delivering Ukrainian grain to their countries.
Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade, and Agriculture of Ukraine Taras Kachka said in his letter to foreign partners that, despite the restrictions on border traffic, the transportation of goods is not restricted or limited.
The letter also stressed that the agro sector was recognized as a priority for the Ukrainian economy and that Ukraine would remain one of the main important suppliers for food security in the region and the world.
Recently, FAO, WHO, and WTO leaders have urged countries not to restrict food exports and thus not break important food production supply chains during a pandemic, as it would have catastrophic damages for global trade and food security in the world.
Ukraine consumes only a third of its crop of grain and exports the rest, so it is an important food supplier to the world. This year, with the production of 98 mmt of grain and oilseeds, Ukraine is supposed to export around 60 mmt. Thus, sufficient grain reserves remain in Ukraine to provide the country with food.
The UGA and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Agriculture are working together to ensure food security for the country and the world.
