Ukraine Continues to Strengthen its Role as Guarantor of Global Food Security

On February 8, at the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) 47th session in Rome, Ukraine became the Committee’s member.

The Committee is an international intergovernmental platform for cooperation between countries to ensure global food security. It reports to the UN General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

“Ukraine is already playing a role of food security guarantor in many countries around the world thanks to our traditionally strong food exports. Joining the UN Committee on World Food Security allows for our country’s even higher engagement in shaping the global food policy. Ukraine continues to strengthen its role as guarantor of global food security,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stressed.

The Minister reminded that according to the results of the 2019-2020 marketing year, Ukraine ranked 1st in the world in the export of sunflower oil, 2nd in the export of barley, entered the top-4 largest exporters of corn and the top-5 largest exporters of wheat.

“The important role of our state was especially evident with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when global supply chains were disrupted. Ukraine continued to fulfill its obligations and significantly contributed to the food security of its partners in the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia and North Africa,” Dmytro Kuleba reminded.

The diplomat underlined that the establishment of Ukraine’s role as the world’s food security guarantor should in no way affect the food balance within our country. As, according to experts, there is no threat to national food stocks, there is also no threat to either exports or domestic consumption.

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) was established in 1974. The CFS has a permanent Secretariat located in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The Committee discusses food security and nutrition issues at the global level. The Committee develops guidelines and policy recommendations that can guide countries in their work on food security and nutrition.
